interpretation

The analyst's verbal intervention that makes unconscious material conscious by explaining hidden meanings or connections.

Full Definition

Interpretation is the primary therapeutic tool in psychoanalysis, involving the analyst's carefully timed verbal interventions that bring unconscious conflicts, defenses, or transference patterns into conscious awareness. Effective interpretations connect past experiences with present behavior, reveal hidden motivations, or clarify the meaning of symptoms. The timing, depth, and wording of interpretations are crucial - premature or overly deep interpretations may increase resistance, while well-timed interpretations can facilitate insight and psychological change. Interpretations should be offered tentatively, allowing patients to confirm or modify the analyst's understanding.

Usage

Usage note: Differs from explanation or advice-giving; focuses on unconscious meaning rather than conscious understanding.
