Full Definition

Antipsychotic-induced parkinsonism is a drug-induced movement disorder that mimics Parkinson's disease, resulting from dopamine receptor blockade in the nigrostriatal pathway. Symptoms include tremor, muscle rigidity, bradykinesia (slow movement), and shuffling gait. This condition typically develops within days to weeks of starting antipsychotic treatment or increasing doses. Unlike idiopathic Parkinson's disease, this condition is usually reversible when the causative medication is discontinued or the dose is reduced. It is more common with first-generation antipsychotics but can occur with second-generation agents as well.
