Full Definition

A class of antipsychotic medications developed since the 1990s that demonstrate reduced propensity to cause extrapyramidal side effects compared to first-generation (typical) antipsychotics. Atypical antipsychotics, including risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, and aripiprazole, work through different receptor mechanisms and generally have more favorable side effect profiles regarding movement disorders. However, they carry increased risks of metabolic side effects like weight gain and diabetes. The term 'atypical' refers to their pharmacological profile rather than their therapeutic efficacy.
