CYP enzyme induction is the process by which certain drugs or substances increase the synthesis and activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver and other tissues. This results in enhanced metabolism of substrates metabolized by these enzymes, potentially leading to reduced efficacy of co-administered drugs. In psychopharmacology, common inducers include carbamazepine, phenytoin, and smoking (which induces CYP1A2). Enzyme induction typically develops over days to weeks and can significantly affect plasma levels of psychotropic medications. Understanding induction patterns is crucial for predicting drug interactions and adjusting dosages accordingly.
