Older antipsychotic medications that primarily block dopamine receptors, also known as typical or conventional antipsychotics.

Full Definition

First-generation antipsychotics, also called typical or conventional antipsychotics, are the older class of antipsychotic medications developed in the 1950s and 1960s. These medications primarily work by blocking dopamine D2 receptors in the brain. Examples include haloperidol, chlorpromazine, and fluphenazine. While effective for treating positive symptoms of schizophrenia such as hallucinations and delusions, they are associated with a higher risk of extrapyramidal side effects and tardive dyskinesia compared to second-generation antipsychotics. They are still used today, particularly in cases where newer antipsychotics have been ineffective or poorly tolerated.
