Immobilization Device

Custom-fitted equipment used to maintain precise patient positioning and minimize movement during radiation treatments.

Full Definition

Immobilization devices are specialized positioning aids designed to maintain reproducible patient setup and minimize movement during radiation therapy sessions. These devices include thermoplastic masks for head and neck treatments, vacuum bags for body positioning, and custom cradles or molds. Proper immobilization is critical for treatment accuracy and safety, as even small movements can result in significant dose delivery errors. The selection and creation of appropriate immobilization devices is part of the simulation and treatment planning process.

Usage

Usage note: Often shortened to 'immob device' in clinical notes, but should be spelled out in formal documentation.

In Context

  • "A five-point thermoplastic mask was fabricated as the immobilization device for the brain tumor patient." — Simulation report
