Late effects are adverse consequences of radiation therapy that manifest months to years after treatment completion, typically after 90 days post-treatment. Unlike acute toxicities that occur during or shortly after treatment, late effects result from progressive damage to slowly proliferating tissues such as connective tissue, nervous system, and vascular structures. Examples include radiation pneumonitis, spinal cord myelopathy, second malignancies, and organ dysfunction. Late effects are generally irreversible and dose-dependent, making them a critical consideration in treatment planning and long-term follow-up care.
