A linear accelerator (LINAC) is the primary treatment machine used in external beam radiation therapy. It accelerates electrons to high energies using radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in a linear configuration. These electrons either directly treat superficial tumors or strike a target to produce high-energy X-rays (photons) for deeper tumors. Modern LINACs are equipped with multileaf collimators, electronic portal imaging devices, and computer-controlled positioning systems that enable precise dose delivery techniques such as IMRT and VMAT.
