tissue expansion

Process of gradually stretching skin and soft tissue using an inflatable device to create additional tissue for reconstruction.

Full Definition

A reconstructive technique that involves the progressive inflation of a silicone balloon device (tissue expander) placed beneath the skin to gradually stretch the overlying tissues and create additional skin and soft tissue coverage. In breast reconstruction, tissue expansion is commonly used as the first stage of a two-stage process, allowing for gradual accommodation of the final implant size while preserving skin envelope and improving aesthetic outcomes. The expansion process typically occurs over several weeks to months through serial saline injections.

Usage

Usage note: Refers to the process, not the device (tissue expander); often used in context of two-stage reconstruction.

In Context

  • "Tissue expansion proceeded smoothly with weekly fills of 50cc saline over eight weeks." — Follow-up documentation
  • "The patient tolerated tissue expansion well with minimal discomfort during the inflation process." — Clinical progress notes
