tissue expander

Inflatable medical device placed under the skin to gradually stretch tissue for reconstruction.

Full Definition

A tissue expander is a temporary implantable device designed to gradually stretch skin and muscle to create additional tissue for reconstructive purposes. Most commonly used in breast reconstruction following mastectomy, the expander is progressively filled with saline over several weeks or months. This two-stage reconstruction process allows for better aesthetic outcomes and proper tissue accommodation before permanent implant placement. Documentation should include expansion volume, schedule, and patient tolerance.

Usage

Usage note: Should specify volume capacity and fill status in clinical documentation.
