A direct communication pathway between the brain's electrical activity and an external device, used in rehab technology to enable motor or communicative function in people with severe disabilities.

Full Definition

A brain–computer interface (BCI) is a system that acquires, processes, and translates neural signals—typically electroencephalographic (EEG) or intracortical—into commands that control external devices such as communication software, robotic arms, or powered wheelchairs. In rehab technology editorial contexts, BCI appears in clinical research papers, technology assessments, and funding narratives for cutting-edge assistive devices. Editors should note that the en dash (–) is the preferred separator in 'brain–computer interface,' not a hyphen, following standard compound-modifier conventions for multi-word concepts linked by relationships rather than modification. The acronym BCI should be defined on first use. Do not confuse with 'brain–machine interface,' which is a closely related but distinct term used more often in engineering literature.
