Gait Analysis

The systematic measurement and interpretation of human locomotion, used to inform prosthetic, orthotic, and rehabilitation technology decisions.

Full Definition

Gait analysis is an instrumental or observational procedure that captures spatial, temporal, kinematic, and kinetic parameters of a person's walking pattern. In rehab technology, it informs device prescription (e.g., prosthetic knee selection, AFO stiffness) and evaluates the outcome of interventions. Instrumented gait analysis typically involves motion capture, force plates, and electromyography. Editors should note that 'gait analysis' is always two words; 'gait-analysis laboratory' uses a hyphen only when the compound precedes a noun. Reports generated from gait analysis are called gait analysis reports or kinematic reports.

Usage

Usage note: Always two words as a noun phrase. Hyphenate only when used as a compound modifier directly before a noun.

In Context

  • "Gait analysis confirmed an excessive anterior trunk lean consistent with weak hip extensors on the prosthetic side." — Gait laboratory report
  • "The gait-analysis findings were summarized in a two-page executive report for the referring physician." — Clinical correspondence
