HCPCS Code

Pronunciation: HICK-picks

Also written as: HCPCS — Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System

A standardized alphanumeric billing code from the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System, used in the US to identify durable medical equipment and assistive technology for reimbursement.

Full Definition

HCPCS (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System) codes are Level II alphanumeric codes used primarily in the United States to bill Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurers for medical products, including wheelchairs, orthotics, prosthetics, and other durable medical equipment (DME). Each code consists of a letter (E, K, L, etc.) followed by four digits; for example, K0001 denotes a standard manual wheelchair. Editors in rehab technology documentation must verify that HCPCS codes are accurately transcribed, correctly formatted (letter + four digits, no spaces), and match the device described in the accompanying clinical documentation. Codes are updated annually by CMS.

Usage

Usage note: Always write as 'HCPCS code' (not 'HCPCS Code' mid-sentence). Pronunciation guide 'HICK-picks' should be noted when writing for lay audiences.
