Joystick Proportional Drive

A power wheelchair control method in which the speed and direction of the chair correspond proportionally to the degree and direction of joystick deflection, offering nuanced, intuitive directional control.

Joystick proportional drive is the standard control interface for most power wheelchairs, in which moving the joystick further from centre produces greater speed, and the direction of deflection maps directly to direction of travel. It contrasts with non-proportional or switch-based drive methods, which offer only on/off speed increments. Editors reviewing power wheelchair documentation should note that 'proportional drive' is often mistakenly used to mean any joystick control; strictly, it denotes the proportional relationship between input and output. The term is not hyphenated. Descriptions of joystick type (e.g., short-throw, micro, head array) should appear as separate modifiers.
