Interface Pressure Mapping

A clinical measurement technique using a sensor mat placed between the body and a seating surface to assess pressure distribution and identify areas at risk for pressure injury.

Full Definition

Interface pressure mapping involves placing a thin, flexible mat containing an array of pressure sensors between a patient and their wheelchair seat or cushion. The resulting data, displayed as a colour-coded pressure map, enables clinicians to identify areas of elevated pressure — particularly over bony prominences — that may predispose the patient to pressure injuries (also called pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers). In editorial documents, 'interface pressure mapping' is the standard preferred term; 'pressure mapping' alone is an acceptable shorthand in informal clinical notes but may be ambiguous in formal reports. Editors should also note the distinction between 'interface pressure' (pressure at the body-surface interface) and 'internal tissue pressure'.
