The transformation of endometrial stromal cells into decidual cells in preparation for implantation.

Full Definition

Decidualization is the process by which endometrial stromal cells undergo morphological and functional transformation into specialized decidual cells during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. This process is mediated primarily by progesterone and is essential for successful embryo implantation and early pregnancy maintenance. Decidual cells provide nutritional support to the developing embryo and help establish the maternal-fetal interface. Inadequate decidualization has been implicated in implantation failure and early pregnancy loss.
