Full Definition

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH agonists) are synthetic versions of the naturally occurring hormone that regulates reproductive function. When administered continuously, these medications initially cause a surge in luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone production, followed by downregulation and suppression of the pituitary-gonadal axis. This mechanism is utilized in reproductive endocrinology for various purposes including endometriosis treatment, uterine fibroid management, and as part of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation protocols in assisted reproductive technology. Common examples include leuprolide, goserelin, and nafarelin.
