oocyte maturation
Process of egg cell development from immature to fertilizable state, crucial for successful reproduction.
Full Definition
Oocyte maturation encompasses the complex developmental process by which an immature egg cell becomes capable of fertilization. This process includes both nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation, involving resumption of meiosis, chromosome alignment, and accumulation of proteins and mRNAs necessary for early embryo development. Nuclear maturation progresses from prophase I arrest through metaphase I to metaphase II, where the oocyte arrests again until fertilization. In assisted reproduction, oocyte maturation can be assessed by the presence of the first polar body and clear perivitelline space. The LH surge or hCG trigger shot initiates final maturation approximately 36 hours before ovulation or egg retrieval.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguished from ovulation, which is follicle rupture and egg release
