Oocyte retrieval, also known as egg collection or follicular aspiration, is a minimally invasive procedure performed under ultrasound guidance to collect mature oocytes from ovarian follicles. The procedure is typically performed under conscious sedation or general anesthesia using a transvaginal ultrasound probe with an attached needle guide. The needle is inserted through the vaginal wall into each follicle, and the follicular fluid containing the oocyte is aspirated. The procedure usually takes 20-30 minutes and is performed approximately 36 hours after administration of a final maturation trigger. The retrieved oocytes are immediately evaluated by embryologists for maturity and quality before proceeding to fertilization.
