The removal of cells from the outer layer of a blastocyst for genetic testing without damaging the inner cell mass.

Full Definition

Trophectoderm biopsy is an advanced laboratory technique performed on day 5-6 blastocysts where several cells are removed from the trophectoderm (the outer layer that will become the placenta) for genetic analysis while preserving the inner cell mass that will develop into the fetus. This procedure is more technically challenging than earlier cleavage-stage biopsy but provides more genetic material for testing and is associated with better pregnancy outcomes due to improved embryo viability.
