varicocele
Pronunciation: VAR-i-ko-seel
Enlargement of veins within the scrotum that can impair sperm production and male fertility.
Full Definition
A varicocele is an abnormal dilation of the pampiniform venous plexus within the spermatic cord, creating varicose veins in the scrotum. This condition affects approximately 15% of men and is present in 35-40% of men with primary infertility. Varicoceles can impair spermatogenesis through increased scrotal temperature, oxidative stress, and altered blood flow to the testes. In reproductive endocrinology, varicocele repair (varicocelectomy) may be recommended for men with abnormal semen parameters and clinically significant varicoceles. The condition is more commonly found on the left side due to anatomical differences in venous drainage.
