preimplantation genetic testing

Also written as: PGT — Preimplantation Genetic Testing

Genetic analysis of embryos before transfer during IVF to screen for chromosomal abnormalities or specific genetic conditions.

Full Definition

Preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) involves analyzing cells from embryos created through in vitro fertilization before they are transferred to the uterus. This testing can screen for chromosomal abnormalities (PGT-A), single gene disorders (PGT-M), or structural chromosomal rearrangements (PGT-SR). The procedure allows couples to select embryos without specific genetic conditions for transfer, reducing the risk of inherited diseases or pregnancy loss.

Usage

Usage note: Capitalize when used as a proper procedure name; lowercase in general descriptive text.
