Embryo Biopsy
The removal of cells from an embryo for genetic testing without compromising its development.
Full Definition
Embryo biopsy is a microsurgical procedure performed to obtain cells from an embryo for preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). The procedure can be performed at different stages: polar body biopsy (day 0), blastomere biopsy (day 3), or trophectoderm biopsy (day 5-6). Trophectoderm biopsy is the current gold standard as it samples cells destined to become the placenta rather than the fetus, providing genetic information while minimizing potential harm to the developing embryo.
