Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is a specialized X-ray examination that uses contrast dye to visualize the internal anatomy of the uterus and fallopian tubes. During the procedure, contrast material is injected through the cervix into the uterine cavity, and serial X-ray images are taken to assess tubal patency, uterine shape, and identify abnormalities such as fibroids, polyps, or congenital anomalies. The procedure is typically performed in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle to avoid potential radiation exposure to an early pregnancy. HSG is considered a first-line diagnostic test for evaluating tubal factor infertility and can also have therapeutic benefits by clearing minor tubal obstructions. The procedure may cause temporary cramping and spotting.
