The measure of genetic material quality within sperm, affecting fertilization and embryo development potential.

Full Definition

Sperm DNA integrity refers to the structural completeness of the genetic material within sperm cells. DNA fragmentation or damage can occur due to oxidative stress, infection, varicocele, or lifestyle factors. High levels of DNA fragmentation are associated with reduced fertilization rates, poor embryo quality, increased miscarriage risk, and failed IVF cycles. Testing methods include TUNEL assay, SCSA, and Comet assay. Treatment approaches may include antioxidant therapy, lifestyle modifications, or advanced sperm selection techniques during IVF procedures.
