Full Definition

High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) is a specialized form of mechanical ventilation that delivers very small tidal volumes (often less than dead space) at extremely high frequencies (typically 180-900 breaths per minute). Instead of conventional positive-pressure breaths, HFOV uses rapid oscillations to move gas in and out of the lungs while maintaining a constant mean airway pressure. This technique is primarily used in severe respiratory failure when conventional ventilation fails, as it can improve oxygenation while potentially reducing ventilator-induced lung injury through minimal pressure swings.

Usage note: Not to be confused with HFJV (high-frequency jet ventilation), which is a different technique.
