IPPB

Also written as: IPPB — Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing

Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing therapy that delivers pressurized breaths to help expand lungs and mobilize secretions.

Full Definition

Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB) is a respiratory therapy technique that uses a mechanical device to deliver intermittent positive pressure breaths to patients who cannot take deep breaths independently. The therapy helps prevent atelectasis, improves lung expansion, and assists with secretion mobilization. IPPB treatments typically last 15-20 minutes and may include bronchodilator medications delivered simultaneously. While less commonly used today due to the availability of more effective alternatives, IPPB remains valuable for specific patient populations, particularly those with neuromuscular weakness or post-operative complications.
