Full Definition

Maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP) is a pulmonary function test that measures the greatest negative pressure a patient can generate during a maximum inspiratory effort against an occluded airway. Also known as negative inspiratory force (NIF), this test specifically evaluates the strength of the diaphragm and other inspiratory muscles. The patient breathes through a mouthpiece connected to a pressure manometer with the airway temporarily blocked. Normal MIP values are typically more negative than -80 cmH2O in healthy adults, with values less negative than -30 cmH2O indicating significant respiratory muscle weakness. This measurement is crucial for assessing ventilator dependence, predicting extubation success, and monitoring patients with neuromuscular diseases affecting respiratory function.
