Oximetry is a non-invasive monitoring technique that measures the oxygen saturation of hemoglobin in blood by analyzing the absorption of specific wavelengths of light. Pulse oximetry, the most common form, uses a sensor typically placed on a finger, toe, or earlobe to emit red and infrared light through tissues. The device calculates oxygen saturation based on the different absorption patterns of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin. Normal oxygen saturation values range from 95-100% in healthy individuals. This technology provides continuous monitoring of oxygenation status and is essential in respiratory care, anesthesia, and critical care settings.
