The highest pressure reached in the airway during the inspiratory phase of mechanical ventilation.

Full Definition

Peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) is the maximum pressure generated in the respiratory system during inspiration while on mechanical ventilation. It reflects the total pressure needed to overcome both airway resistance and lung compliance to deliver the prescribed tidal volume. PIP is influenced by factors including tidal volume, inspiratory flow rate, airway resistance, and respiratory system compliance. Monitoring PIP is crucial for detecting changes in lung mechanics, airway obstruction, or ventilator circuit problems. Elevated PIP may indicate bronchospasm, secretions, pneumothorax, or decreased lung compliance, while sudden drops might suggest circuit disconnection or air leaks.

Usage note: Always capitalize when used as an abbreviation; distinguish from plateau pressure which reflects alveolar pressure.
