postural drainage

Chest physiotherapy technique using gravity-assisted positioning to mobilize and drain pulmonary secretions from specific lung segments.

Full Definition

Postural drainage is a respiratory therapy technique that uses specific body positions and gravity to facilitate the movement of pulmonary secretions from peripheral airways toward larger airways where they can be more easily expectorated or suctioned. Each position targets specific lung segments based on their anatomical location and the direction of their bronchial drainage. The technique involves placing patients in predetermined positions for 10-15 minutes per segment, often combined with percussion, vibration, or breathing exercises. Postural drainage is particularly beneficial for patients with excessive secretions due to conditions such as cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, or pneumonia. The therapy requires careful patient assessment to determine appropriate positions and contraindications, such as increased intracranial pressure, recent surgery, or cardiovascular instability.
