Full Definition
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is the highest level of credentialing available through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) for respiratory therapy professionals. To earn this credential, candidates must first pass the Therapist Multiple Choice (TMC) examination at the high-cut score level, then successfully complete the Clinical Simulation Examination (CSE). RRTs have demonstrated advanced knowledge and clinical problem-solving skills beyond the entry-level Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential. Many employers prefer or require RRT credentials for certain positions, and some states require RRT-level credentialing for specific practice privileges.
