Full Definition

The rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI) is a predictive tool used to assess readiness for extubation and weaning success. Calculated as respiratory rate divided by tidal volume (f/VT), it measures the tendency toward rapid, shallow breathing during spontaneous breathing trials. An RSBI less than 105 breaths/min/L is generally considered predictive of successful weaning, while values above 105 suggest continued ventilator dependence. The measurement is typically obtained during a spontaneous breathing trial using minimal or no pressure support to accurately assess the patient's intrinsic breathing pattern.
