Footfall

The number of customers or visitors entering a retail store or defined area within a specified time period.

Full Definition

Footfall is the standard retail analytics metric for measuring shopper traffic volume at the store entrance, department, or specific aisle level. It is captured through infrared sensors, video analytics, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth tracking, or manual counting. Footfall data is used to calculate conversion rates, assess the impact of promotions on traffic, and optimise staffing schedules. In UK retail, 'footfall' is the universally preferred term; the US equivalent 'foot traffic' may also appear in international reports. Editors working on UK retail analytics documents should default to 'footfall,' not 'foot traffic.'

Usage

Usage note: One word in British English retail usage. In documents targeting US audiences, 'foot traffic' is the conventional equivalent. Ensure consistency throughout any single document.

In Context
