Markdown Optimisation

The data-driven process of determining the optimal timing and depth of price reductions to clear slow-moving or seasonal inventory while maximising revenue recovery.

Full Definition

Markdown optimisation uses predictive analytics and demand modelling to recommend when to discount products, by how much, and for how long, balancing sell-through targets against margin preservation. It is especially critical in fashion, seasonal grocery, and perishable goods retailing, where unsold inventory has a time-limited value. Algorithms factor in remaining selling days, current inventory levels, elasticity, and competitive pricing. Editors should note the British English spelling 'optimisation' versus the American 'optimization'; apply consistently per house style. 'Markdown' is one word as a noun and adjective ('markdown rate,' 'markdown calendar') but is occasionally written as two words in older documents.

Usage

Usage note: Check house style for British ('optimisation') vs American ('optimization') spelling. 'Markdown' is one word. Do not confuse with 'promotional pricing,' which involves planned discounts on in-season stock, not clearance.
