Space-to-Sales Ratio

A retail performance metric that measures the revenue generated per unit of floor or shelf space allocated to a product or category.

Full Definition

The space-to-sales ratio (sometimes called sales per square foot or sales per linear metre for shelf analysis) enables retailers and category managers to evaluate whether the floor or shelf space allocated to a product, brand, or category is proportionate to its contribution to total sales. A product with a space-to-sales ratio significantly below the category average is a candidate for space reduction or delisting, while one performing above average may merit increased facings. Editors should hyphenate 'space-to-sales' consistently as a compound modifier and ensure that the unit of space measurement (square feet, square metres, linear metre of shelf) is stated alongside any ratio figures. It should not be confused with sales density, which is typically expressed as sales per unit of total selling area.

Usage

Usage note: Always hyphenate as 'space-to-sales ratio'. State the unit of measurement (square feet, linear metres) explicitly; the ratio is not comparable across documents that use different units.
