Eb/N0 (pronounced 'E-b over N-zero') is the fundamental measure of digital link quality, independent of bit rate or bandwidth. It represents the energy carried by each information bit relative to the background noise power density. In link budget calculations, the required Eb/N0 is determined by the modulation and coding scheme (MODCOD) in use, and the link must deliver sufficient C/N or C/N0 to meet this threshold. Editors must render the term precisely: 'Eb/N0' with subscript notation where typographically supported, or 'Eb/N0' in plain text. It must not be confused with C/N (carrier-to-noise ratio), which is a related but distinct quantity.
