DVB-S2X

Pronunciation: dee-vee-bee ess-two-ex

Also written as: DVB-S2X — Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite – Second Generation Extended

The extended version of the DVB-S2 satellite transmission standard, offering additional modulation schemes, wider rolloff options, and improved spectral efficiency for professional and HTS applications.

Full Definition

DVB-S2X is an extension of the ETSI DVB-S2 standard (EN 302 307) published in 2014, designed to meet the performance requirements of High Throughput Satellite (HTS) and very high-speed data networks. It introduces higher-order modulation constellations (up to 32APSK in more modes than DVB-S2), additional roll-off factors (5%, 10%, 15%), and super-framing structures for improved ACM performance. The standard is widely adopted in gateway ground stations for Ka-band HTS systems. Editors must reproduce the hyphenation and capitalisation exactly: DVB-S2X, never DVB-s2x or DVBS2X. The 'X' suffix distinguishes the extended standard from DVB-S2.

Usage

Usage note: Reproduce exactly as DVB-S2X with the hyphen and capital X. Do not confuse with DVB-S2 (the predecessor standard) or DVB-RCS2 (the return channel standard for interactive satellite services).

In Context

  • "The gateway modems were upgraded to support DVB-S2X, enabling 32APSK modulation on high-margin beams." — Network upgrade report
  • "Ensure 'DVB-S2X' is hyphenated correctly throughout; three instances in the draft read 'DVBS2X'." — Proofreading note
