maintenance of wakefulness test

Objective test measuring a patient's ability to stay awake during quiet, unstimulating conditions across multiple sessions.

Full Definition

The Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is an objective assessment that measures a patient's ability to remain awake during quiet, understimulating conditions. The test consists of four 40-minute sessions conducted at 2-hour intervals throughout the day, with the patient seated comfortably in a dimly lit room and instructed to try to stay awake. The MWT is particularly useful for evaluating treatment effectiveness in patients with hypersomnia disorders and for assessing fitness for safety-sensitive occupations. Unlike the MSLT which measures sleep tendency, the MWT specifically evaluates the ability to maintain alertness when required.

Usage

Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as MWT; distinguish from MSLT in documentation.
