microsleep

Brief episodes of sleep lasting 1-30 seconds that occur involuntarily during wakefulness, often in sleep-deprived individuals.

Full Definition

Microsleeps are transient episodes of sleep that last between 1-30 seconds and occur involuntarily during periods when an individual should be awake. These episodes are characterized by a brief lapse in consciousness and are most commonly observed in individuals experiencing sleep deprivation or excessive daytime sleepiness. During microsleeps, brain wave activity briefly shifts to that characteristic of sleep, and the person may experience reduced awareness of their surroundings. Microsleeps pose significant safety risks, particularly when driving or operating machinery, and are often documented in sleep studies to assess sleepiness severity.

Usage

Usage note: Often hyphenated in some texts but typically written as one word in medical literature.
