Sleep inertia describes the transient period of impaired cognitive and sensorimotor performance that occurs immediately after awakening from sleep. This state is characterized by disorientation, grogginess, reduced alertness, and diminished ability to perform complex tasks. Sleep inertia typically lasts from several minutes to over an hour, depending on factors such as sleep stage at awakening, prior sleep debt, and circadian timing. The phenomenon is particularly pronounced when awakening occurs from deep slow-wave sleep stages.
