sleep fragmentation

Repeated interruptions of sleep by brief arousals or awakenings that disrupt normal sleep continuity.

Full Definition

Sleep fragmentation refers to the disruption of normal sleep patterns through frequent, brief arousals or micro-awakenings that may not be consciously perceived by the patient. This condition significantly reduces sleep quality and restorative function, even when total sleep time appears adequate. Sleep fragmentation is commonly associated with sleep-disordered breathing, periodic limb movements, and various medical conditions. It is measured through polysomnographic analysis of arousal frequency and sleep stage transitions.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from sleep deprivation, which refers to insufficient sleep duration rather than quality disruption.

In Context

  • "The patient's sleep study revealed significant sleep fragmentation with an arousal index of 45 per hour." — Sleep study report
  • "Despite adequate sleep duration, sleep fragmentation resulted in persistent daytime fatigue." — Clinical assessment
