sleep onset REM

Abnormal transition directly into REM sleep within 15 minutes of sleep initiation.

Full Definition

Sleep onset REM (SOREM) refers to the pathological occurrence of REM sleep within 15 minutes of sleep onset, bypassing the normal progression through NREM stages. This phenomenon is characteristic of narcolepsy and other central disorders of hypersomnolence. SOREM episodes are quantified during multiple sleep latency tests and are significant diagnostic markers when two or more occur during daytime nap opportunities.
