sleep-related eating behavior

Abnormal eating episodes that occur during sleep or partial arousal states, often with limited recall.

Full Definition

Sleep-related eating behavior encompasses various abnormal eating patterns that occur during sleep states or transitions between sleep and wake. The most common form is sleep-related eating disorder (SRED), where individuals consume food during partial arousal episodes with little or no memory of the event. These behaviors can pose safety risks due to preparation of food while not fully alert and may contribute to weight gain and poor sleep quality.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from night eating syndrome which occurs during full consciousness.
