Parasomnia characterized by involuntary eating episodes during arousals from non-REM sleep, often with amnesia for the events.

Full Definition

Sleep-related eating disorder (SRED) is a parasomnia involving recurrent episodes of involuntary eating and drinking during arousals from non-REM sleep. Patients typically have little to no memory of these episodes and may consume unusual food combinations or non-food items. The condition can lead to weight gain, dental problems, and injuries from food preparation. SRED is often associated with other sleep disorders such as restless legs syndrome, sleep apnea, or may be triggered by certain medications. Treatment typically involves addressing underlying sleep disorders and ensuring kitchen safety.
