Theta waves are electroencephalographic oscillations in the 4-8 Hz frequency range that represent an important component of normal sleep architecture and drowsiness states. In healthy adults, theta activity is most prominent during the transition from wakefulness to sleep (stage 1 NREM sleep), during REM sleep, and in states of relaxed wakefulness or meditation.
