A titration study involves systematic adjustment of CPAP, BiPAP, or other positive airway pressure devices during polysomnographic monitoring to eliminate respiratory events and optimize sleep quality. Sleep technologists gradually increase pressure settings while monitoring for resolution of apneas, hypopneas, snoring, and sleep fragmentation across different sleep positions and stages. The study determines the minimum effective pressure that maintains airway patency throughout the night. Titration studies may be performed as separate nights following diagnostic studies or combined in split-night protocols when severe sleep apnea is evident early in the initial study.
