Full Definition
The normal physiological backward curve (convex anteriorly) of the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine. Normal lordosis is essential for proper spinal biomechanics and load distribution. When used in a pathological context, lordosis refers to excessive inward curvature that may cause pain and functional impairment. Loss of normal lordosis (hypolordosis or kyphosis) can also be problematic and may require surgical correction.
