Exercise-induced coronary spasm, also known as exercise-induced vasospastic angina, involves temporary constriction of the coronary arteries during physical exertion. Unlike typical exercise-induced ischemia from fixed coronary stenosis, this condition can occur in athletes with angiographically normal coronary arteries. The spasm may be triggered by exercise-related catecholamine release, electrolyte shifts, or hyperventilation, and can lead to chest pain, arrhythmias, or even sudden cardiac events during athletic participation.
