HCM

Also written as: HCM — hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy; inherited condition causing abnormal heart muscle thickening, leading cause of SCD in young athletes.

Full Definition

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic cardiac condition characterized by inappropriate thickening of the heart muscle, particularly the left ventricle, in the absence of another cause. It is the most common cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes and competitive sports participants. The condition can cause outflow tract obstruction, arrhythmias, and impaired diastolic filling. Diagnosis requires careful differentiation from athlete's heart through advanced imaging and genetic testing.

Usage

Usage note: Capitalize as acronym; avoid using HOCM unless obstruction is specifically documented.
